Message: by: Joshua Jones Suddenly, God spoke to my heart with a warm peace. A light blazed to life illuminating the darkness of my thoughts. --------------------------------- The Lord has blessed me in countless, wonderful ways. From a loving family to a stable job, the Lord has met and exceeded my needs. Some recent events have taught me He continues to bless and protect me even when I don’t realize it. All my life I have dealt with stomach problems. From acid reflux to what I’ve always considered to be irritable bowel syndrome, I’ve trudged and sometimes suffered through one thing or another. To complicate the problem, I also have anxiety and worry issues, so regardless of what I’ve ever been told, I’ve worried my stomach problems were signs of something horribly serious. A few weeks ago something inside clicked, and I decided I was going to be done worrying and seek out some professional help. I called to arrange an appointment with a gastroenterologist. I expected to have to wait a couple of weeks to get in, but I was able to see the doctor that very afternoon. After a short discussion, the doctor believed my problems to stem mostly from anxiety and acid reflux. He wanted to perform a couple of procedures to be sure nothing else was going on, so a couple of days later I was scheduled for an upper endoscopy and a flex sigmoidoscopy. The first examined my esophagus and stomach for damage from acid reflux, and the latter inspected a section of the colon. After enduring the preparation, I went in to the exam. As I had never been subjected to anesthesia, I was understandably a bit nervous. The staff of the surgical center was comforting, and my procedures were completed quickly and easily. The upper endoscopy revealed some damage from acid reflux, but my doctor said my prescription medicine should clear that up without any difficulty. He went on to explain that the flex sigmoidoscopy had started out routine and had been almost completed without incident. Then he said he had gone in a little further than usual, although he had no reason to do so. Upon moving further, he discovered an inflamed polyp in the colon. Polyps are common, but he said the find surprised him given my age. At my follow-up appointment, I learned there are two basic classifications of polyps: the standard polyp that doesn’t amount to anything, and the precancerous type. Obviously the precancerous polyps are more troublesome as they could potentially lead to cancer. The doctor said this one appeared to be non-precancerous, but he wanted to remove it anyway. I was scheduled for a full colonoscopy a couple of weeks later. Once more I endured the procedure preparation on a Thursday, and on Friday morning I was back at the surgical center for the colonoscopy. The procedure went quickly and without difficulty once again. Although my follow-up appointment was scheduled for the next Friday, my anxiety demanded I call in on Tuesday to check on any results. The doctor explained the polyp was benign with no sign of cancer, but it was the precancerous type. He said there was nothing to worry about, but I would have to start regular colonoscopies to keep a check on any further polyps. At first, I was distressed by the news that, although the polyp was benign, it was the precancerous type. My head raced through all the worst-case scenarios one could possibly imagine. I worried more was wrong, and I dreaded the thought of having to endure multiple colonoscopies by the time I should normally have had my first. Suddenly, God spoke to my heart with a warm peace. A light blazed to life illuminating the darkness of my thoughts. I began to see His hand in every aspect of the events of the passed couple of weeks. He led me to seek immediate medical attention, He provided the quick attention I received, and He guided the doctor’s hand to look further than normal – every little step seemed perfectly scripted. I know many prayers went up for me, and not just a few of my own. I’m thankful for every one, and I’m thankful the Lord answered them in His loving kindness. I am more aware now of the ways the Lord provides for me even when I’m not looking or not expecting it. What a loving God we serve.
