Calming a Storm
He has given us authority over the elements
Storms are very normal events all over the globe. Jesus spoke to one when it directly threatened the safety of His disciples and Himself. He did not hesitate for a moment to interfere with a natural event when it endangered the lives of human beings. It is apparent from the way the storm responded that He had the authority to do that, as it calmed immediately. If He had that kind of authority, and His life is to be an example for us, then do we not have similar authority over the elements?
Most people believe Jesus was able to calm the storm on the Sea of Galilee because He was the Son of God, but in John 14:12 He says, “I can guarantee this truth: Those who believe in me will do the things that I am doing. They will do even greater things because I am going to the Father.” (God’s Word Translation) James 5:17-18 tells us that the prophet Elijah was a normal man just like us, yet he had the power to stop the rain throughout the land of Israel for three and a half years, and then start it up again through his prayers. If he could do such things by the anointing of God under the Old Covenant, should we not be able to do them after the New Covenant has restored us to our position as sons and daughters of God?
One day I attached a temporary awning to the front of our garage so my wife would have room to hold a garage sale without setting things out in the open. About 3 o’clock in the afternoon storm clouds began approaching from the south.
I knew my simple structure would stand no chance against the winds of a storm passing through, so I prayed that God would divert the storm, or cause it to dissipate.
Immediately after praying I heard the Holy Spirit inwardly telling me that God was not the one I should be addressing with this matter. I then turned my attention to the devil and the kingdom of darkness, commanding Satan to turn the storm away or cause it to dissipate without doing any damage to my property.
