Grace and Lego Foundations

by amilam

I had a tendency to be a stacker.

This week in our group lesson on grace, we were asked to choose a small object that could act as a symbol for different kinds of grace.  This was our list: grace that comes in ordinary moments, grace that forgives me, grace that sustains me through the hard times, grace that brings me joy, grace that keeps me secure forever, and grace that helps me build a legacy.  It’s not easy to pick one small thing to symbolize each of those, but as we talked things though I finally thought of one: a Lego.

I chose a Lego to remind me of grace that helps me build a legacy.  It’s something my father passed on to me, and I, in turn, can pass on to Gabrielle.  I remember sitting on the living room floor playing Lego’s with my dad.  He loved to build houses, and he taught me how to give my Lego house a strong foundation.  I had a tendency to be a stacker.  I would pile on the blocks just to see how high I could stack them and inevitably they would totter and fall.  Dad’s buildings were shorter, but they were sturdy with strong foundations.

Much in the same way, he taught me about building a different kind of foundation.  I remember him reading to me the story Jesus told about the wise man and the foolish man.  The wise man built his house on the rocks, a strong foundation.  When the storms hit, the house reminded standing.  The foolish man built his house on the sand, a weak and shifting foundation. When the storms hit, the house fell.  My dad taught me to build my life with a strong foundation in Jesus Christ.  Now, when I look at that Lego sitting high on the shelf, I’ll never forget.

When I put this site together, this is exactly the kind of story I was hoping others would post here.

Thank you.
