How could they be a Christian band playing this kind of music?

I play in a Christian band, we are a ‘hardcore’ band, which involves heavier music, screamed vocals, etc.  But our message is genuine.

We started as a regular old ‘screamo’ band, we thought the style of music was cool, we were liked by the people who dressed like us and listened to that kind of music, but mocked and made fun of by others, people in our school, and older people as well (20’s).  To the extent of getting stuff thrown at us by passing cars (no lie!) calling us “emo’s”, We were just regular people, we partied after the shows, drank a lot, and some members, got involved with drugs (I should remind you, we are all aged 16-18).

One day though, we were driving around together listening to one of our favorite bands (which happened to be Means), and someone brought up that they were a Christian band.  We thought “how could they be a Christian band playing this kind of music?” But then we started looking past the style, and getting the message.

We all accepted Jesus, and started over, changing our name, writing new songs, basically becoming new people. We quit partying, started taking time before shows to pray, and, not surprisingly, when we put everything in God’s hands, and started doing it for Him rather than ourselves, things really changed.  We were writing better songs, getting asked to play more shows, and by word of mouth got contacted oddly enough by the same record label Means was on, and got a great deal on recording (paid $500 for recordings regularly priced at $3000).

Since then, shows have been different too, we scream God’s word at the top of our lungs, and I really believe He acts through us and is present while we play.  Ironically, some of the same people who threw stuff at us now come to shows and are singing along to our songs, which really shows me how people can change and gives me hope for people. If God could settle our differences, what else can He do?

Jordan, that is a great story!  I’m a huge music lover myself but unfortunately not a fan of heavy music, but that’s ok, when I was your age my parents hated my music too.  I was a fan of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc.  which back in the day was considered heavy. But it doesn’t matter the taste in music you have, it’s who you are playing for.  I hope if you become successful, you won’t forget God, your young and will have many temptations.  Satan does not want you where you are, remember he comes to steal, kill and destroy.  Hang tough and God Bless!
