Receiving

by

My life has been spent embracing ‘It is better to give than to receive’.

All of my life, I’ve been a ‘giver’.  My primary spiritual gift is mercy, and MAN can I deliver it!  My life has been spent embracing ‘It is better to give than to receive’.  In fact, I learned this early from a mother who often gave beyond her means.  However, God does not say it is bad to receive.  In fact, throughout the New Testament, we see many examples of Christ on the receiving end of goodness from others…and he is so graceful when he accepts what others offer.

I recently had to follow this example when I had my very first surgery.  My friends were thoughtful enough to line up almost four weeks of meals for my family.  It was truly amazing to me that other people organized a schedule and then delivered the meals – and I prayed about being as gracious in accepting their gifts.  In hindsight, I’m not sure what we would have done without them.

For me, this resonates with God’s message that we are the body of Christ on earth. We all have a part to play, each day, if we are paying attention to the needs of those around us.  And now, when I am in the position of receiving a heartfelt gift, I remember to be as gracious as Christ would.
